The former Hanseatic town skilfully uses the legend for city marketing purposes: The hedgehog welcomes visitors with cheerful regional "Moin" directly at the place name sign of Buxtehude.
Fantastic Location
Buxtehude is situated amid beautiful surroundings near Hamburg - a fantastic location. On the one hand, the "Altes Land" (the largest collective fruit growing area in Europe) as well as the "Lüneburger Heide" start directly on the outskirts. On the other hand, there are important industrial centers in close proximity at less than 50 km away. Hamburg is such an industrial center. Known as "The Gate to the World", it is a hub of trade and a prosperous metropolitan region extending from Schlewig-Holstein, to Niedersachsen and Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. This promises value in terms of leisure and economic prospects and can be reached in less than half an hour´s journey from one place: Buxtehude.
University with Tradition
The town does not only profit from its proximity to Hamburg and from its attractive surroundings, it is also able to refer to time-honoured traditions as a Hanseatic town and trade centre between Scandinavia and Western Europe with a praiseworthy academic history.
For approximately 130 years Buxtehude has been ´university town´ hosting the Northeast Lower Saxonian public University of Applied Sciences for decades. With the study focus on architecture and civil engineering Buxtehude ranks among the top institutes in Germany as published in the prestigious university league tables of magazine "Stern".
The successor of the public University of Applied Sciences, the state-approved private University 21, upholds this successful tradition.
