Schedule of Studies

Who is responsible for what, at what time and with what kind of teaching content? All information about modules of the existing dual degree courses.

At first some general information about schedule of studies, teaching methods and kinds of examinations. More detailed information about degree courses and modules is given under

- civil engineering (BAU)

- architecture on the stock (BIB)

- construction and real estate management (BIM)

- physiotherapy (PT)
- mechatronics (MEC)

The following notes solely refer to the degree courses related to construction.

Theoretical and practical periods are essential parts of the dual full time education.

Notice: From winter term 2010/2011 onwards the standard period of studies in the degree courses "Civil Engineering", "Structural Alteration Studies" and "Construction and Real Estate Management" at University 21 will be increased from 6 to 7 terms.

Theory and Practice

The theoretical and practical periods last 13 weeks each. Two weeks for examinations belong to the theoretical period, two weeks of holidays to the practical period.

During the practical periods the students have to work on company problems, parallel to their working time, in form of a practical test, that University 21 is responsible for. During the practical period of the last semester the bachelor thesis has to be written (operating time altogether 8 weeks).

Schedule of Studies

The range of courses offered during the theoretical period is adapted to the requirements of the future jobs. In order to get the students fit for their professional future, personal key qualifications, foreign languages and English courses in the elective field are part of the teaching.

In every theoretical period five special modules are offered. The time of compulsory attendance varies from four to eight hours per week, depending on the module type. With preparation of courses and examinations, work in the laboratory and homework the students have to spend altogether about 150 hours per module.

Synergies

The modular structure of the studies makes synergies with other degree courses possible. As in Buxtehude there are three degree courses with different relation to construction industry, a close internal cooperation within the university is possible.

In the first semester teaching contents of the three degree courses related to construction are identical. Due to increasing specialization the interdisciplinary cooperation in higher semesters includes some modules only.

Teaching Methods

In dual education at University 21 there is teamwork in small groups (about 30 students). Discussion groups are even smaller, ideally 1 to 2 students only. Many modules include practicals in a laboratory.

For most of the modules constantly updated lecture notes are offered. They are made available to the students as photocopies or in the intranet.

Field trips belong to a practical oriented technical degree course, too. Those one or several day excursions lead to interesting building sites and producers of building products at home and abroad.

Kinds of Examinations

There are the following proofs of academic achievements:

- oral examination

- written examination

- project work (homework, draft, seminar paper or other proofs of academic achievements)

- bachelor thesis
