What do I have to consider before departure?

1)    Language knowledge
Please consider that the course language in all degree courses is German. There is only a very limited offer of modules in English language at the moment.

2)    Living Costs
In Germany the living costs range between 300€ to 500€ per month. As ERASMUS-student you are exempted from study fees and enrolment fees.

3)    Accomodation
Rooms in Buxtehude cost about 200 or 300€ per month. If you want to look for it by yourself, it is recommended to reach Buxtehude about one month prior to the start of studies, in order to find suitable accomodation.
The International Office may help you to find a room in the student dormitory “buxbau” . There are apartments for singles or for groups from 2 to 6 persons available for about 135€ to 210€. If you want to buy a bicycle for your daily ride to the university, please ask for it at the student home administration.
At the outskirts of Buxtehude, situated very close to University 21 there is student home Estebrügger Strasse, which is under direct control of Studentenwerk Braunschweig. There you have the possibility to choose between single or double apartments, as well as rooms in double apartments or rooms in units for 4 students. The room rent varies according to the size of the room and lies between 152€ and 206€ per month. In units for 4 students there are mostly rooms available.

4)    Health Insurance
According to German law students enrolled at German universities will be insured in legal health insurances up to their 14th term and to a maximum age of 30 years.
The insurance certificate has to be presented at times of enrolment. Private insurances from foreign countries will not be accepted.
As EU-citizen you will get a so-called “certificate of exemption” for University 21 after presentation of the health insurance certificate from your home country to local insurances in Germany.

How to get to Buxtehude?

Buxtehude is situated in the northern part of Niedersachsen, south-west of Hamburg. If you want to take the aeroplane, Hamburg is the nearest airport. There is a shuttle bus from Hamburg airport to Hamburg main station, where you can either use the regional train (direction Buxtehude/Stade/Cuxhaven) or the subway to Buxtehude.

Please inform the International Office of University 21 about your arrival time at Hamburg airport. Then we will mail to you the best possibility to get to Buxtehude by train.

If you take your car to come to Buxtehude please see „Approach“.

What happens after my arrival?

If your arrival time is fixed and you have informed the International Office in time, we will organize a student of University 21 for you, who picks you up at Buxtehude station, takes you to the student home and helps you in the university the first days.

Please also come to the International Office as soon as possible after your arrival, as we want to help you with all other formalities.

What else does University 21 offer to me?

a)    Library
The modern university library invites you to stay for a while.

b)    Use of Computers and Internet
The university computing centre is responsible for everything concerning computers. At the beginning of every term there is an introduction to computer usage on our welcome day. Every student is informed about access to internet via WLAN and gets his own e-mail address.

c)     Meals
On the first floor of the university building there is the new university canteen-café. During the lecture period it offers warm dishes in addition to beverages and snacks. But as Buxtehude’s city centre is close by, it is possible to dine out as well.

d)    Sports and More
At University 21 the students of the student organization "Fachschaft" are your contact persons for sport and other leisure time activities in Buxtehude and its surroundings.
As highlight for the students University 21 offers a skiing trip to Switzerland together with vocational school Winsen every year.

e)    Events
Additional to enrolment celebration, science night and practical day every year there is the traditional bridge festival, where students of engineering translate their theoretical knowledge into practice. Much fun for visitors and participants.
